Ten Senses Africa Limited (TSA) is a social enterprise established in Kenya in 2008, processing and exporting Organic and Fair-Trade certified nuts and fruits sourced from smallholder farmers in Kenya and Rwanda.
Production of cashew nuts in Kenya has been on a decline due to poor policies, lack of support, increasing effects of drought and climate change and lack of market for produce. Kenya currently produces 10,000 tons of cashew annually against its full potential of 60,000 tons.
The project
Ten Senses Africa (TSA) Limited received financial support of €580,000 from the AgriFI Kenya Challenge Fund in the third call for applications and has matched these funds with €734,865. With this funds, TSA Ltd hopes to establish a cashew processing plant in Kilifi County. It will use 46% of the AgriFI funding to purchase the required machinery. TSA Ltd will then work with Sote Hub to help 150 schools to farm cashews on land that they own. Learners will tend to this land as part of a structured agriculture and entrepreneurship programme. TSA Ltd will also buy cashews from some of the 15,000SHFs that are beneficiaries of the project it is running for the EU.
Project Activities:
- Setting up a high-capacity factory to process volumes of quality cashew products to the demanding markets of EU and USA.
- Involving10,000 school children from 150 schools in establishing cashew farms thus including the younger generation into agriculture and opening alternative revenue stream to the schools.
- Certifying schools as producers of organic Fair-Trade cashew.
- Training of students and farmers into increased access to food crops and dietary diversity.
