Smart Logistics Solutions Ltd.

Smart Logistics Solutions (SLS) Ltd is a food processing company located in Machakos County trading in primary food staples such as beans, sunflower, green grams, soybeans, sorghum, among others, aggregated from contracted smallholder farmers.

The project

Through the AgriFI project, SLS is promoting a new variety of beans ‘Nyota’ which is best suitable for processing. It is a Kenya Agricultural Livestock Research Organization (KALRO) variety and is biofortified with zinc and iron. It is also good for the farmer since it is drought tolerant and high yielding.

Project activities

• Cutting inefficiencies attributing to sourcing quality grains from farmers by 50% through linking farmers to reliable input suppliers, risk and financial services.
• Introducing mobile aggregation centres and introducing a Management Information System.
• Increasing bean yields by 40% through the introduction of improved bean varieties, training in good agronomic practices, availing necessary inputs on time and encouraging the use of organic fertilizer.
• Providing extension services to farmers through recruitment of field officers and community mobilizers, setting up model farms to demonstrate improved technologies and linking farmers to service providers. 
• Improving the governance in farmer groups by organizing farmers in structured groups.
• Increasing efficiencies of processing at company level tom operate optimally at 75% efficiency level through increasing the capacity of the processing plant, recruiting new staff and training them in food safety. 
• Consolidating market share and expanding to new markets by establishing an efficient distribution system and an online marketing system.
