Kenyacof Limited is a coffee trader and exporter that provides professional farm-to-roaster services which ranges from trading of coffee and market access for coffee growers, to extension services, farm management, inputs provision, certification schemes like Rainforest Alliance and Fair-trade, and financing of coffee growers.
The project
With support from AgriFI, Kenyacof aims to:
- Tackle declining production and quality, farmers are receiving training geared towards improvement of yields per tree, while training of the technical cooperative factory staff is being focused on quality and efficiency in processing. Financing and providing linkages to institutions that farmers can partner with for provision of equipment and inputs shall is being addressed. Kenyacof is the off taker of increased qualities and quantities of coffee which is sold to the international market at premium prices.
- Improve the capacity of cooperatives on governance issues, finance, HR and strategic management principles to improve running of the cooperatives.
- Through training on Climate Smart Agriculture, coffee production is being upheld and increased. Soil and water conservation management practices are increasing coffee production from the current 2 kgs to 10 Kgs per tree. Other activities include use of parabolic coffee dryers reducing post-harvest losses by 20-30%, use of renewable energy at the coffee wet mills and household, wastewater management, reforestation, as well as introduction of shade trees and intercropping.
- Increase participation opportunities for Women and Youth in the value chain. Kenyacof Ltd. is establishing nurseries for production of resistant coffee varieties, fruit seedlings for intercropping, trees for shade in coffee and ornamental with the purpose of providing business opportunities for women and youth. Financial literacy training and adoption of VSLA model is being used to empower them.
- Roll out the Kitchen Garden Model as a strategy to enhance food and nutrition security is ensuring that farmers are able to produce their own food and sell the surplus in case of excess production, leading to a more sustainable and resilient coffee farming community.
